The Collector

A shadowy figure roams the city looking for tortured souls. He is particularly drawn to those with tormented souls and those who meet violent ends. He was there during the civil war, the influenza epidemic and both world wars. Now he is among us in this city.

This piece is the first installment in a trilogy of shorts exploring the relationship between photography and the ephemeral quality of the soul. Early Native Americans believed that the camera could steal their soul. Even in Europe, the writer Honore de Balzac suspected photography of capturing more than his likeness. These ideas inspired us to construct the surreal environment of The Collector: A timeless character who utilizes an industrial age instrument to capture the essence of human beings.
